A Field Guide to Everyday Monsters

Think you’ve outgrown monsters under the bed? Well, the truth is, some of them have set up camp. And they’ve got quite a lot to say about how you live your life.

They have opinions about how we should behave, what other people might think, and whether we’re allowed to admit we’re having a rotten day. And they’re remarkably good at getting their own way.

Most of these monsters are trying to be helpful. They’re protecting us from something, whether that’s letting people down, being a burden or attracting criticism. The trouble is, they don’t always know when to stop.

A Field Guide to Everyday Monsters is an illustrated collection of the habits, fears and little rules we live by, often without realising quite how much say we’ve given them.

Come and meet the crew….

The Fix-It Monster

The Fix-It Monster has never met a problem it didn’t think it could solve. It arrives armed with tools, solutions, advice and an alarming sense of responsibility for other people’s difficulties.

Whether anyone actually asked for help is beside the point.

The All-Good Monster

The All-Good Monster is exhausted and holding itself together with a smile that looks suspiciously pasted on. Ask how it’s doing and you’ll get the same cheerful answer every time.

Even when everything is very definitely not all good.

The Best-Not Monster

The Best-Not Monster has plans. Quite exciting ones, actually. Unfortunately, before acting, it must anticipate every possible objection from people who haven’t even been consulted.

Better to do nothing than risk somebody raising an eyebrow.
